dislike of, contempt for, or ingrained prejudice against women.
I get asked about how I feel being a female DJ quite often, as any female trying to come up in a male-dominated industry. For me, I’m pretty indifferent to the issue. I’d rather be a dope DJ than be a dope female DJ. I will always be supportive of my sisters putting in that time and effort and demanding the respect they deserve through the work they put out. If they use other methods that pretty much support misogyny…hey, that’s their path, not mine.
I found out about Kittens (iamkittens.com) years ago when I first started DJing. At the time when I was listening to her mixes, she went by SoulRe and her mixes consisted of underground hip-hop beats and R&B tracks. My favorite genres.
I started following her career and she transitioned from SoulRe to Kittens when she joined HW&W. I was a huge fan of HW&W’s artist roster and I loved that she was the only artist on there repping the ladies. She was always vocal about how she wanted women’s roles in the industry to evolve and identified with her position.
I’ve been working on this for a little while now and I’m happy and grateful that BAMP Project was willing to take a chance. Kittens will be gracing us with her presence this Friday at The Safehouse (lounge within the Republik). She’s doing a lot of great things right now: just finished Fool’s Day Off, officially became a Serato Artist, announced her tour with Diplo…she’s truly an inspiration to me.
I’ll be opening as well as DJ SSSolution. I love it when he plays his bass-electronica bounce but still gully sets and I think this is going to be a great platform for him to show that.
